Fuel consumption represents a significant operating cost in the use of a vehicle, for both personal and professional applications. Given the high variability of fuel consumption caused by the driving style, traffic conditions, road conditions, weather and other factors, drivers’ choices and practices can reduce this cost. U-Save has an objective: allow users to identify the best route not only on the basis of the estimated travel time but on the basis of different combinations of travel time and travel costs (i.e. “generalized” travel costs).
Users have different options to weigh in a different way the two cost components elements of the generalized travel costs in order to tailor the application to their specific needs of the customer.
U-Save can also deal with the travelling salesman problem where multiple origins and destinations are present. In this light the tool is particularly suitable for fleet operators with the objective to minimize the operating costs while at the same time respecting the existing time constraints.

How it works

Suggestions

This is the standard mode in U-Save: enter the waypoints and the software will calculate the routes from the first waypoint to the last one. You can add/remove waypoints and move them on the map. The new routes and fuel consumption are calculated every change you make in the car settings and in the waypoints positions.
Remember that the 3 top buttons will activate/deactivate the 3 different routes types (less distance/less duration/less fuel).

This mode can be activated only when 4 or more waypoints are selected. This button appears (button image gif) and, by just clicking it, the software will find the optimal routes for the salesman to visit all waypoints. If you want to have the salesman come back to the origin point, just set the location of the last waypoint to the same one of the first.
The interface remains the same, with the same functionality of standard mode.

Fuel consumption calculator and route optimizer

U-Save shows the shortest distance route and shortest time route on a map. This is something all mapping software do. What differs from the others is that U-Save can show you the less fuel consumption route, the route that you can take to lessen your fuel consumption and save money. U-Save will output also the fuel consumption value of each route! Just change the fuel type, engine capacity, car weight and other parameters and the Tool will calculate the fuel consumption on each shown route.

How much fuel can you save by using the less fuel consumption route? Here we have an example of fuel saved on four different route types.

Travelling salesman for optimized fuel consumption

The travelling salesman problem ("given a list of cities and the distances between each pair of cities, what is the shortest possible route that visits each city exactly once and returns to the origin city?" - source Wikipedia) was solved by different complex algorithms but never linked to fuel consumption models. U-Save shows the less fuel consumption route for a list of waypoints and provides the fuel consumption estimation. Now the user can have the optimal route based upon fuel consumption.
U-Save uses brute force for less than 10 waypoints and a greedy heuristic (farthest-insertion algorithm) for 10 or more waypoints. Here we have an example of fuel saved on four different route types.
